FAQ

What is Outward Bound?
Outward Bound believes that everyone has within themselves the potential to achieve more than what they think they are capable of doing.

The first Outward Bound School was established in Wales in 1941. Its original aim was to teach young merchants and seamen self-reliance, confidence and teamwork that were necessary to carry out their duties on treacherous journeys across the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, we use the term "Outward Bound" to mean a ship leaving the safety of her harbour for the challenges of the open seas.

Hence, when you leave the comfort and familiar environment of your home and workplace to venture into unfamiliar territory, or when you change your usual way of thinking and adopt new ideas, you are said to be "Outward Bound."

Since 1993, Outward Bound Romania has been applying these principles of adventure learning to create exciting and innovative urban and school-based education programs, as well as customized professional development programs for businesses and non-profit organizations. It's an opportunity to help you discover your true self, expand your capabilities and extend your limits.

Who is Outward Bound for?
Outward Bound courses are open to anyone who wants to learn more about their self. People of all ages and backgrounds participate in our courses.

Will I be safe?
At Outward Bound, safety is a fundamental priority. Every aspect of our courses is designed and implemented with safety in mind. Our instructors are professional trainers, chosen as much for their leadership and interpersonal skills as they are for their technical expertise. All are fully trained in a wide range of safety procedures, first aid and wilderness emergency care and rescue.

Learning how to handle new situations and safely take part in challenging experiences, is a large part of the value you take from an Outward Bound course.

Do I have to be strong or athletic?
Absolutely not. Participants of varying physical abilities and fitness levels have successfully completed Outward Bound courses.

Who else will be with me?
Course groups are generally comprised of 8 to 15 participants and 2 instructors. Depending on the course, participants come from all across Romania as well as from around the world.

What if I am afraid of heights, cold, or....?
Everyone on an Outward Bound course feels a little apprehension at the beginning. All we ask is that you are willing to try. All tasks are achievable.

Who are the instructors?
Outward Bound instructors are a key element in the success of Outward Bound courses. They are men and women who have had their own lives shaped by adventures and who now wish to share their enthusiasm and skill with others. They are skilled, dedicated and caring outdoor educators with a broad range of personal and professional experience. With an average age of 28 years, they are formally qualified in First Aid and CPR and have extensive wilderness experience. In addition to this, they are continually updating their skills through independent training, personal expeditions and staff development opportunities provided by Outward Bound Romania and by Outward Bound International.
